Demonstration against Early Marriages

On November 25, demonstration against early marriages was organized in Gori. According to the participants, early marriages increase cases of domestic violence. According to the statistic data, during two years (2011-2013), 7 367 girls (pupils of 7th-9th grades) stopped secondary education because of early marriages and related problems.

Press Release - the Observatory Geneva-Paris, October 16, 2015 – The appeal trial in the case against Ms. Leyla and Mr. Arif Yunus opened before the Baku Grave Crimes Court on October 12. On August 13, both had been convicted to 8.5 and 7 years jail sentences in a trial that grossly disregarded international standards of fair trial and due process. As the appeal trial is unfolding, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (OMCT-FIDH programme) calls for these outrageous sentences to be nullified.

Socially indigent mother applied to Human Rights Center for help. Rusudan Zaalishvili is growing up her 6-years-old son alone in extremely hard conditions. They do not have income and accommodation. She has health problems too. Rusudan Zaalishvili petitioned to the Tbilisi City Hall for flat rent.

Appeal Court Acquitted Beneficiary of Human Rights Center

The Appeal Court acquitted convicted beneficiary of the lawyer of Human Rights Center in the administrative charge against him. The convicted person is Vazha Utiashvili from Gurjaani, 25-years-old. The Appeal Court discharged him from the accusation on the influence of narcotic substances as it was ruled by the district court on April 30, 2015.

On August 17 and 18 Human Rights Center received two letters of Nestan Verulashvili, director of semi-closed and semi-open penitentiary establishment # 5 for female convicts. The prison director informed the organization about hunger-strike of the convict Nana Parchukashvili.

Representatives of Human Rights Center talk about unfair attitude towards female prisoners. According to the human rights defenders, the formation of new provision of the article 260 of Criminal Code of Georgia provides separation of sale of narcotics from purchasing, possessing and transferring. They welcome this fact; however, the change did not affect the article 262 of CC, which instilled feeling of injustice and protest in female convicts.

According to them, the birth date of the twins who were born on different days by surrogate mothers was registered on the same calendar day.

According to the information of the State Agency for Non-Custodial Sentences and Probation of Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia, usage of community service as a non-custodial sentence has been increased since 2012. According to the official data, this type of sentence was used for 72 cases in 2012, for 260 cases in 2013, for 272 cases in 2014, and in 2015 332 cases are recorded.
