On May 1, Human Rights Committee of the Parliament reviewed the bill initiated by the government. The law-makers discussed amendments to the Article 260 of the Criminal Code of Georgia which refers to dissociation of criminal liability for drug-crimes. The discussion was closed for civil society organizations.
Court Acquitted Giorgi Tsomaia

On May 6, Tbilisi City Court acquitted Giorgi Tsomaia in the imposed charge – assault on police officer. Judge Khatuna Kharchilava at the Criminal Case Collegium at the Tbilisi City Court reviewed Giorgi Tsomaia’s case. Lawyer Mariam Neparidze and lawyer of Human Rights Center Tamar Avaliani defended Tsomaia’s interests at the court.

Public Defender and the Special Preventive Group Member will be Granted the Right to Take Photos in Penitentiary Establishments

On May 1, 2015, the Parliament of Georgia approved “the Code of Imprisonment” and substantial package of related draft laws with the third hearing which gives the Public Defender and the member of the Special Preventive Group the right to make photo recordings in penitentiary establishments starting from September 1, 2016. The legislative package envisages conduction of the institutional reform in the penitentiary system.

Court Dispute about Guardianship of Underage Child of a Person with Cancer

22-year-old Meri Nadirashvili has cancer. Her former husband Levan Razmiashvili requests guardianship for their child. Meri Nadirashvili was diagnosed of cancer two years ago. At that moment she was three-month pregnant. Husband abandoned Meri because of the disease. The patient was operated on several times and the child was born healthy though the young woman’s health conditions worsened.

Court Granted Permanent Residence Permit to Citizen of Egypt

“The Counter-Intelligence Department [CID] considers it is not reasonable to grant permanent residential permit to an applicant,” citizen of Egypt Emad Ibrahim Khalil Ibrahim received this conclusion several times form the CID. As a result, State Services Development Agency of the Ministry of Justice refused to grant residence permit in Georgia without considering the propriety of the CID conclusion.

Trial into the criminal case against Azerbaijan human rights defender Rasul Jafarov was renewed in the Baku Court on Grave Crimes at 11:00 am on March 31; locals said during Tsarist Russia the building of the court was used as a stable for horses. Convicted Giorgi Marsagishvili Urges for Help

On March 23, 2015 convicted Giorgi Marsagishvili from Batumi prison # 3 sent letter to Human Rights Center. The prisoner wrote about extremely unbearable conditions in the penitentiary establishment. According to his letter, life-threatening conditions are purposefully created in the punishment rooms. Giorgi Marsagishvili names concrete people and requests their punishment because they inhumanly treat prisoners.
