Human Rights Center Finished Project of the Labor Therapy for Prisoners

Human Rights Center finished project “Introduction of the Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Program for Prisoners in Georgia.” The project aimed to promote psycho-social rehabilitation for the prisoners and it was implemented in the Rustavi Prison # 16, low-risk facility, in August – December of 2015.

In 2012 Parliament of Georgia, after having overridden the president’s veto, passed the Law on Amnesty. Ministry of Internal Affairs and different fractions of the Parliament of Georgia did not support the amnesty law but with big effort of the parliamentary majority the law went in force.
Will Prison #7 Be Closed?

Public Defender of Georgia published report on the visit in the Penitentiary Establishment # 7 on June 19, 2015 and considering the report results he recommended to close the facility. The report of the monitoring group states about violation of hygiene norms, overcrowding, inadequate medical assistance and many other problems in the Prison # 7.

On August 17 and 18 Human Rights Center received two letters of Nestan Verulashvili, director of semi-closed and semi-open penitentiary establishment # 5 for female convicts. The prison director informed the organization about hunger-strike of the convict Nana Parchukashvili.

Paris-Geneva, July 31, 2015 – The sentencing of human rights defender Rasul Jafarov to six years in prison was confirmed today by the before the Baku Court of Appeal. Arbitrarily detained since August 2, 2014, the conviction of Mr. Rasul Jafarov is based on trumped-up charges and aims at preventing him from carrying out his legitimate human rights activities, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders said today.

Representatives of Human Rights Center talk about unfair attitude towards female prisoners. According to the human rights defenders, the formation of new provision of the article 260 of Criminal Code of Georgia provides separation of sale of narcotics from purchasing, possessing and transferring. They welcome this fact; however, the change did not affect the article 262 of CC, which instilled feeling of injustice and protest in female convicts.
