Politically Motivated State Assistance Program for Infants Abolished

According to the resolution of the Georgian Authority issued on December, 2008 State Assistance Program for Infants from poor families has been abolished. Before the presidential elections of November 5, 2008 Mikheil Saakashvili promised to assist such kinds of families with grants of 1,000 GEL at the birth of each child. However, this initiative was canceled on December 5.

“Everyone knows that the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child is concerned about state level policies and legal amendments in the field of juvenile justice among many countries. However, in spite of the body of knowledge of such rights and supporting legislation at the international level, there are numerous signs indicating that governments violate regularly violate children’s rights. Generally, simple decisions can be rather dangerous, even leading to the new cycle of violence, even if the intention was to make a positive contribution,” says Dainius Puras (the UN Committee for the Rights of the Child) in his recent report.

Several days ago TV Company Rustavi2 released an item in news program where under-age children were being publicly implicated in commercial prostitution. Georgian society became anxious about the revealed fact; mostly they became very angry with the people who brought such fact to public light. The administration of the City Service Department for Child Rights exposed the “shameful episodes” of 13-15-year-old girls. Later, however, they explained their behavior as follows.

Who breaks the law, teacher or their pupils?! Everybody can answer this question in the public school of the village of Taleri in Martvili District. However, teachers and pupils are pointing the finger at one another. The school has been famous for serious discontent between its human resources a long time already; pupils have recently become activists. Last week, the controversy between teachers and pupils reached a peak. Consequently, the adults were brought to the police station; and teachers and Board of Trustees are discussing their dismissal.

Kindergarten Nurses Petition Georgian President and Ministry of Education

Nurses of kindergartens in the Zugdidi region petitioned the Georgian president, the Minister of Education and Science two years ago. All three requests were related to introduction of amendments to the Georgian Organic Law about Local Government. The Zugdidi branch of the Independent Trade Union of Education and Scientific Activists continues to demand the authority kindergartens to be assigned again to the Georgian Ministry of Education.
