Georgian Patriarch Ilia II Makes Statement to Azerbaijan Regarding St. George Church

November 20, 2007
Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia and Archibishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi, his Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II petitioned the Head of the Muslim Department of All Caucasus, Sheikh-ul Islam Allah Shukur Fasha Zade and Namig Aliev, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Georgia. The Catholicos-Patriarch requested support for Georgian parishioners to arrive unencumbered to St. George’s Church in the Kakhi Region of Azerbaijan on November 23, St. George’s Holiday.

The petition stated that religious services were suspended in Kurmukho St. George’s Church as it was declared a cultural monument. The Catholicos-Patriarch reminded the Head of the Muslim Department of All Caucasus that the Juma mosque in Tbilisi is also a cultural monument and Muslim residents of the capital are still permitted to hold services without difficulty.

Ilia II requested that Sheikhul Islam Alah Shukur to mediate between Georgian parishioners and the corresponding bodies in Azerbaijan to restore religious services in Kurmukho.
