“At Public Offices the Personnel Is Demanded to Confirm in Written Form that They Are Going To Vote for Saakashvili at Presidential Elections”

November 21, 2007

MP Guguli Maghradze stated that some forms are distributed at public departments and employees are demanded to fill in them in order to prove that they are going to vote for Mikheil Saakashvili at the Presidential Elections.

The MP stated at the parliamentary session today that she had heard similar information from several citizens. Those people told her that unless they confirm that they are going to vote for the President in the elections, they will face some difficulties at their jobs.

According to Maghradze President Mikheil Saakashvili stated that all candidates should have equal rights during the election campaign. The president also added that general situation in the country should not cause any doubts in the fairness of the elections.

Maghradze stated that in order to guarantee fair elections in the country, the presence of free media in the country is an important factor. However, suspension of the TV Company “Imedi” contradicts with that principle.

According to the MP’s estimations current situation will fail to convince international observers that elections are going to be fair. The MP calls upon the authority to take above-mentioned factors into consideration before elections.
