Young People Were Dispersed in Batumi

December 3, 2007

Today, at 2:00 PM students intended to hold a protest demonstration in Batumi. Earlier they were going to gather near the Batumi Navy Academy. However, the policemen from the second division of the main department and law enforcers from the Adjara main department within the Ministry of Internal Affairs dispersed them. Several young men were detained and tried for administrative offence.

Merab Ghoghoberidze, deputy chairman of the youth branch of “Republic Party“escaped the detention with the assistance of “old acquaintance”: “One of the police officers recognized me and did not “push me into” the police car”, mentioned Ghoghoberidze.

The head of the second division of the main department does not comment on the fact: “I can not tell you anything, apply to the press-centre.”

The former president Mikheil Saakashvili is arriving in Adjara today. The young people still intend to hold a demonstration.
