Valeri Gelbakhiani Blames the Government for Stirring Up National Discord

December 17, 2007

Valeri Gelbakhiani, the head of Presidential candidate Badri Patarkatsishili’s election headquarters, does not consider Levan Berdzenishvili’s recent remarks anti-Semitic. Berdzenishvili, a member of the United Opposition, called Matia Iorsh, the head of the European Council’s Monitoring Group, a “Hungarian Jew,” which the Georgian government has harshly criticized as being anti-Semetic.

“Our Presidential candidate is a Georgian Jew which is attractive in many ways,” Gelbakhiani states. “It confirms 26 centuries of friendship between our nations.”

In his opinion, the government is intending to stir up  national discord by focusing on such issues.

At a briefing today, Gelbakhiani called for anyone insulted because of their national origin to apply to the Patarkatsishvili headquarters for assistance. Gelbakhiani says they will take appropriate measures for such injuries and, if applicable, will begin procedures to apply to the special prosecutor at the International Court of Justice in the Hague.
