Irakli Okruashvili Will Be Taken to France from Germany

January 9, 2008

Former Georgian Defense Minister, Irakli Okruashvili, might be granted with political shelter by the French Government.

Eka Beselia, the attorney for Okruashvili, said in her conversation with the Medianews that French side has already decided to invite Okruashvili to France from Germany. The reason for their decision is the visa French Embassy had issued on the former Defense Minister before being detained in Germany. Okruashvili will be deported to France in several days and his case will be discussed there.

Note: On September 27 2007 Irakli Okruashvili was arrested for misusing his power, extortion, money laundering and negligence. However later he was released under bail. Then he traveled to Germany where he was arrested again based on the request of Georgian government. At the moment he is in the pre-trial detention setting according to the Berlin Court decision.

Pavle Kublashvili, member of the Georgian Parliamentary Majority, thinks that if French government grants former Defense Minister with political shelter, it will not encourage Georgian law enforces to drop criminal prosecution against him.

“It is natural that granting a perpetrator with political shelter does not result into dropping criminal prosecution against him/her. Thus the prosecution will continue according to the Georgian legislation. Law enforcers will make comments on other issues,” said Kublashvili.
