Public Defender Demands to React on the Facts of Torture and Physical Intimidation

January 30, 2008

Sozar Subari, Public Defender calls upon the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Prosecutor General’s Office to react upon the facts of physical intimidation and torture immediately.

Today, at the press-conference Public Defender mentioned several facts of physical intimidation and torture that were committed by law enforcers.

According to Subari victim of torture is suppressed until s/he stops filing complaints.

One of similar facts happened in the village of Kveda in the Oni district in October of 2007, where Akaki Maisuradze, the deputy head of the Oni District Department and two employees of the Department severely beat Levan Maisuradze, the resident of the village of Kveda, because the latter had insulted them during the conflict.

Eye-witnesses of the incident are Gocha and Zviad Qistauri, (father and son) who took Levan Maisuradze to his brother's house in unconscious conditions.

Sozar Subari reported that Levan Maisuradze took medical treatment at Tbilisi Hospital for more than a month.

It is noteworthy that Akaki Maisuradze and his two employees broke into Jemal Maisuradze's flat, the brother of Levan Maisuradze, with guns, and threatened them with the death of Levan Maisuradze.

As Sozar Subari, Public Defender stated the facts looks like the murder of Sandro Girgvliani; however fortunately Levan Maisuradze has survived.
