Irakli Okruashvili Was Released from Preliminary Detention

February 1, 2008
Paris Court changed preliminary arrest into house-arrest for the former Georgian Defence Minister, Irakli Okruashvili. Paris Court will discuss his case - to grant political asylum or to extradite to Georgia - on 27 February. The former Defence Minister was released with several terms. He has to hand in his passport to law enforcers, he has to visit Paris Police Station twice a week, he is forbidden to leave Paris; he cannot arrive at the airport either.

Irakli Okruashvili was arrested in Germany; he was extradited to Paris on 9 January.

Eka Beselia, the Attorney for the former Defence Minister, announced cancelling of the preliminary detention is a provision that extradition issue will be impartially settled and Okruashvili will not be transferred to Georgian law enforcers. “Okruashvili is a victim of political intimidation and nobody doubts about it now,” stated Eka Beselia
