Disable People Petition President

February 19, 2008
Disable people from Kakheti have sent an open letter to the Georgian president. Invalids are protesting over the order of the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Welfare, which was announced on the 27th of February 2007.  Thousands of disabled citizens are no longer able to receive pensions because of this order.

“Following changes those suffering with diabetes, blood circulation problems, ontological and psycho-neurological diseases and also cirrhosis, and other acute diseases are now left without pensions. It is because of this the public heath of our population has been decreased. Most people cannot even afford to buy basic medicines and this cut into the quality and time that they have to live. The pension that disabled people receive is not even enough to buy the basic food.

The letter is signed by about 300 disabled citizens.

Those who signed the letter have asked the president of Georgia, the Chairperson of Parliament, as well as the head of Health Welfare parliament committee, and the new minister of Health Welfare to review the previously entered order.

As those impacted have told the Human Rights Center, if they do not see any response then they will take up protests at the end of February.

Human Right Center began campaign in the defense the rights of the disabled last week.
