Consideration of State Program for Child and Teen Violence

The official state plan is to be discussed about overcoming violence among children and teenagers. It is expected that the media will be engaged in the work of state officials.

The Committee of Healthcare and Social Issues (CHSI) held its first meeting with media organizations and with various specialists that deal with violence among children and teenagers.

Otar Toidze, head of the (CHSI) said that social life has become more active and in this regard that there is simultaneously an increase in acts of violence among this target group. Sometimes the violence ends fatally. The violence among children is a pressing issue and the government has decided to solve the problem by elaborating the State Program for Overcoming Violence among Children and Teenagers.

In spring of 2007 a working group was established at the initiation of the Healthcare Committee. The aim of the work group was to mobilize experts of the field, representatives of media and enthusiastic NGOs in working together to solve the problem of child and teen violence. Otar Toidze headed up the working group.

Otar Toidze said that many problems were discovered during the work of the group and it is now necessary to discuss these issues so to come up with an appropriate decision and one that will provide adequate information about the results of the discussion to a larger society.  Toidze highlighted the role of media in this regard.

 Otar Todize said that only the professional journalists who know the topic of violence among children must cover in their reporting the problem and share correct and up-to-date information with society.

 Today the Committee members, violence specialists and journalists met and discussed the prospects for future cooperation. They also discussed how Georgian media will participate in the international conference that will be dedicated to overcome violence among children and teenagers, which is scheduled for February 27-28.

The conference is organized by Georgian Parliament and the fund Global Initiation in Psychiatry.  The focus of the conference deals specifically with Violence among Children and Teenagers: Ways of Solving the Problem. 

Representatives of governmental and non-governmental bodies will participate in the conference.  Nino Burjanadze, speaker of the Parliament of Georgia will open the conference.
