Kakheti Regional Governor Becomes Interested in Arbitrary Detention of Chechen Refugee

March 10, 2008
Levan Bezhashvili, Regional Governor of Kakheti has inquired into the arbitrary detention of Gia Khangoshvili, a twenty-one-year-old Chechen Refuge. Earlier today, the governor met with family members of the detainee, who provided details surrounding the detention of their loved one. Mr. Bezhashvili promised the family his support.

fficers from the Akhmeta district Police Department arrested Gia Khangoshvili in September of 2007. The prosecutor’s office blames him for stealing items belonging to Dutch journalists and have prepared a sentence of eight years imprisonment. The accused has not pleaded guilty, while his attorney is demanding that his immediate release. Several days ago Chechen refugees and members of the local Kist population held a protest action in the village of Duisi in Pankisi Gorge.

The Human Rights Center has taken interest in Khangoshvili’s case. Lawyers of Human Rights organizations assess that there is no valid evidence in the case materials that could prove Khangoshvili as being guilty. The Telavi District court will discuss the case in the near future.
