Disabled People Will Receive Pensions

March 11, 2008
The Georgian government took into account the request of disabled people and Aleksandre Kvitashvili, new Minister of Healthcare introduced amendments to the decree of January 13, 2003 of the Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia.

Twenty diseases were added to the list of the diseases that enable a person to receive the disability status. Consequently, the people suffering from diabetes, cardio vascular diseases, cancer, liver cirrhosis and other serious diseases are able to reinstate pension. The copies of the decree of March 4, 2008 of the Ministry of Healthcare have already been sent to medical institutions. The decree is in force.

It is noteworthy that in February of 2008 Human Rights Center started a campaign to protect the rights of the disabled people. Within the frameworks of the campaign numerous materials were publicized via regional and central TV-companies as well as by printed media. We also sent a petition to the Georgian President requesting to review the decree of January 13, 2003 of the Minister of Healthcare. The petition was signed by about thousand disabled people.
