MAP Status at NATO Summit Denied

April 3, 2008
NATO summit in Bucharest decided that the issue of MAP for Georgia and Ukraine will be put on hold and discussed again in December of 2008. Meanwhile NATO will implement intensive involvement program for both countries.

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer says the alliance is committed to bringing both Georgia and Ukraine aboard one day.

“Today we have agreed that these countries will definitely become members of the Alliance. Both countries have contributed to the operations of commonwealth members. We support continuing democratic reforms in Georgia and Ukraine and expect that the parliamentary elections in May will be held democratically. Today we would like to state that we support the appeal of Georgia and Ukraine for MAP status and consequently we launch the Intensive Involvement Period with both counties in order to explain all questions about MAP,” reads the statement of NATO Summit.

Nearly ten countries did not vote for granting MAP status to Georgia and Ukraine at the Bucharest Summit. Among them were France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Netherlands and several other countries.
