Georgia Joins International Convention against Torture

On July 8 2005 Georgia signed onto the UN Convention against Torture, Cruel, Inhuman and De-grading Treatment, or Punishment. Based on this protocol, Georgia has assumed responsibility for setting up a national mechanism to prevent torture through cooperation with the Sub-Committee against Torture. Georgia will now have to closely monitor closed institutions and reveal instances of violations and take all preventive measure to make sure that  all kind inhuman treatments is outlawed.

ON April 9-10 a working meeting will be arranged in the framework of Joint Program initiated by Council of Europe and European Commission to Support non-judicial Structure Working on Human Rights. The meeting was organized by the office of Human Rights Commissionaire of the Council of Europe and Human Rights Centre of the Padua University.

Representatives of the human rights institutions were invited from eastern European Countries and former Soviet Countries. Grigol Giorgadze, the head of Investigation and Monitoring at the Public Defender’s Office and Giorgi Gotsiridze, specialist in chief for the Department for Freedom and Equality.
