The Georgian Central Election Commission has published its preliminary results of the parliamentary elections that were held on 21 May 2008. Zurab Kachkachishvili, spokesperson of the CEC stated during a briefing held earlier today that based on the current information “United National Movement” is leader and gained 59, 48 percent of the total number of votes cast.
Election bloc “United Opposition” (National Council, New Rights) took the second place with 17, 69 percent. Giorgi Targmanadze-Christian Democrats gained 8, 26 percent of votes; Shalva Natelashvili came in fourth place with 7, 55 percent of the vote.
Other eight election subjects received following amount of voters: Republic Party gained 3,78 percent; election bloc “Rights Alliance (Topadze-entrepreneurs)”- 0, 92 percent; Political Union “Christian-Democratic Alliance”-0, 89 percent; election bloc “Traditionalists-Our Country and Women’s Party”- 0,46 percent; the political citizen union -Georgian Politics- 0,46 percent; Political Union “Union of Georgian Citizens”- 0,21 percent; National Party of Radical Democrats-0,18 percent and political party, Our Country-0,12 percent.
Zurab Kachkachishvili reported that results of the majoritarian candidates (single mandate) have almost been completed now single mandate candidates of the National Movement have won the vast majority of the seats. More precisely, 71 out of total 75 MPs through majoritarian system will be from the ruling party; 2 will represent the Republic Party and another 2 from the United Opposition.
