The Human Rights Center Recalled Observers Precincts - Threat of Terror and Death

May 23, 2008

The mass election violations continue to occur in Signagi and Lagodekhi districts. Unauthorized people were inside the voting precincts. They forced voters to come out of the election booths to show their ballot papers in order to check that number 5 (the United National Movement’s number was properly marked (circled). Tamar Kakashvili and Nodar Kutibashvili, both the representatives of the United Opposition were ousted from Signagi DEC. Abulashvili, the single mandate MP candidate of the United National Movement in Signagi district entered the polling stations with a so-called “hit squad” and proceeded to threaten and intimidate members of the election commission.

All five precincts in village Kabala, Lagodekhi district did not function normally as the oppositional parties and domestic NGOs had to call their representatives off the precincts. The elections were totally falsified; this was also confirmed by the numerous violations reported from observers.

The Human Rights Center called all its observers off Lagodekhi and Signagi precincts just after they had been there for a few minute. This was needed as a result of oppositional parties had been demanded to vacate the precincts, and then the observers were left alone against hired  criminals from “hit squads” that had been recently released from prison just for the purpose of securing an election win. The criminals threaten the representatives of the NGOs with loaded weapons.
