War Veterans Cannot Enjoy Benefits in Adjara

May 29, 2008

Unlike war veterans residing in Batumi, veterans from other districts of Adjara Autonomous Republic cannot enjoy the same allowances as it is claimed that there are not enough funds budgeted for them in the district budget.

War veteran Mevlud Beridze lives in the village of Feria in Khelvachauri. However, he does not remember when he last received any financial or other allowance. “We were supplied with gas and the family used it for free. Now we are not supplied with gas. I cannot arrive in the district center to find out what is the problem.”

The same situation is about war veterans in Kobuleti. “Veterans from Batumi receive all kinds of allowances. But we have not received anything for already one year. We also do not receive vouchers for gas, water, and communications, and to cover the cost of supplied electricity. Why is there such a great difference? Did not we fight against Hitler like others?”

Unlike Batumi Municipality Budget, funds are not allocated for veterans in district budgets. “Currently, restoration of allowances for veterans is being discussed. In 2008 budget of Kobuleti District vouchers on gas and other aids were also not envisaged. Now we are trying to negotiate in order to restore the allowance on gas as well as other benefits too,” said Dali Giritiladze, the head of the Kobuleti Department for Social Welfare and Service of Veterans and IDPs.
