Head of Giorgi Mosidze’s Election HQ Beaten with Baseball Bats

June 2, 2008

United opposition blames the authorities for the physical harassment of their supporters. Today, Davit Gamkrelidze, the leader of the United Opposition, spoke about concrete instances of harassment. He also mentioned the beating of Soso Botsvadze, the head of Giorgi Mosidze’s election HQ in the Gori district.

Gamkrelidze claims the supporters and members of the United Opposition have been subjected to abuse since May 26.

Davit Gamekrelidze, the leader of the opposition, has appealed to Mikheil Saakashvili, Vano Merabishvili, the Internal Minister of Georgia, international organizations and the office of the public defender to stop the terror that has been inflicted upon the country.  He said, “The government will not succeed with such terrorist acts, and such behavior has the potential to be classified as the authority of terror and the reaction may be terror in return. Under such conditions opposition leaders will not be able to manage to gain control of the on-going situation in the country and people will on their own react to the government’s actions.”

Soso Botsvadze stated he was on his way home when one masked and one unmasked people blocked his car and beat him with baseball bats. He was carrying audio and video materials how elections had been rigged.
