July 14, 2008

Today, Tbilisi City Court postponed the discussed of the suit of the TV Company “Maestro” against the Georgian National Communication Commission.

The Board of the company stated that the discussion was postponed because the defendant side did not appear to the court. Two representatives of the Georgian National Communication Commission went to Batumi to study the materials of other case despite the fact that both sides had agreed the date of the trial in advance.

TV Company “Maestro” protested that fact and stated the refusal on license is equal to the restriction of freedom of speech and “their behavior today created a serious fear about the future existence of the TV Company because even if the trial is conducted in September, it will be difficult for Maestro to change the TV format on the same year and sign contracts with advertisement companies at the end of the year.

Representatives of the “Maestro” state that they will not end legal fight for the protection of freedom of speech in Georgia; they call upon Georgian media sources, international organizations, representatives of the diplomatic corps and NGOs to express their own opinion regarding the activities of the National Regulation Commission. “The commission has become a strong tool for the Georgian government to fight against free speech.”
