Patriarch of Georgia Requests to Enter Conflict Zone

August 18, 2008

Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II requested the Russian Patriarch to assist him to get in touch with the population of Gori and Nikozi Eparchy.

The Georgian Patriarch stated that he got in touch with the Patriarchate of Moscow and Russia and asked them to support him to get in touch with the population of the Gori and Nikozi Eparchy. He also requested the permission to enter Gori and Nikozi personally to withdraw wounded and dead soldiers from the area.

The reply from the Patriarchate of Moscow and Russia stated they had not received previous letter of the Georgian Patriarchate where the latter had appealed to the Russian president and prime-minister.

Georgian Patriarch stated that they sent the appeal second time.

Ilia II called upon the Georgian people to pray for peace and to read Psalm 50 to regret and psalm 90 that protects people from hidden and viewed enemies.

“Do not get depressed and do not be afraid. Georgia has endured much more difficult days during its history,” stated the Georgian Patriarch.
