Varshalomidze Appointing His Favorite on Post of Sakrebulo Chairperson

September 9, 2008

The Human Rights Center has obtained unofficial information, that Levan Varshalomidze, head of Adjara Autonomous Republic dismissed Badri Kajaia, Batumi Sakrebulo (body of self governance) Chairperson.

The Batumi Sakrebulo oppositional members state that Levan Varshalomidze said on Thursday on the extraordinary faction meeting that Badri Kajaia had to continue his studies and complete a Master’s program. However, the Batumi Sakrebulo Press center representatives have since denied this information.

Opposition party members state that Gia Diasamidze, Sakrebulo member, trauma specialist and former employee of the Ministry of Healthcare will be appointed to Kajaia’s former position. Diasamidze is one of Varshalomidze’s team members.

The Sakrebulo chairperson is usually an elected post.  However, the opposition party members within the Sakrebulo state that Varshalomidze will appoint Diasamidze to this position.

Badri Kajaia declines to comment. It must be noted that Kajaia was elected by the Sakrebulo members for 4 years and he had worked only for 2 years before being “forced” to continue his education.
