Protest in Front of Parliament Hall Demand of Returned of Confiscated Private Property

September 29, 2008

Those inhabitants of the City of Sighnaghi who had their property taken from them are planning to protest in front of Parliament in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The people who lost their property after Sighnaghi was rehabilitated told the Human Rights Center that they lost their homes and means for making a living when authorities deprived their property  by physical violence and threats of being jailed.

The General Prosecutor’s Office started am investigation on some cases of property confiscated. However, the outcome of the investigation did not bring positive results for those who were damaged. The property owners also appealed to Gia Arsenishvili, chairperson of the Human Rights Committee within the Parliament of Georgia. Nonetheless, Arsenishvili did not express an interest to their cases.

According to the preliminary information, the victims will start their protest on Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 at the entrance of the Parliament Hall. The NGOs functioning in Kakheti Region will also join the protesters.
