IDP from Karaleti Village Hunger Striking with her Children

October 1, 2008

Natia Chechelashvili, an IDP from Karaleti village has been hunger striking in Gurjaani Municipality Office along with her 3 children. The female IDP has addressed Davit Macharashvili, head of the Social Division within the District Governor’s Office for help but only received insulting words in response.

Natia Chechelashvili told the Human Rights Center that she has not received any kind of aid for the 15th day now. She feeds her children only mouldy bread she was given by a guard of a bakery.

Aleksandre Imerlishvili, First Deputy of Gurjaani District Governor informs that they had been helping Chechelashvili earlier. However, he said at the present moment the local government does not have enough funds to continue supporting. Imerlishvili dismissed the mother of three together with her children from his chamber because the IDPs’ clothes were dirty.

It is noteworthy that the Human Rights Center monitored the process of IDP support program implemention and found out that tens of thousands of GEL being raised from local businesspersons and employees of state bodies and this money was spent without purpose. These funds were raised by the Social Division of Gurjaani District Governor’s Office. The information on majority of funds is still inaccessible to the public or to journalists.
