Council of Europe (COE) Adopts Resolution on the Recent Developments in Georgia

October 3, 2008

Today on October 2nd, 2008 the COE Parliamentary Assembly has adopted a resolution which declares that Russia violated the territorial integrity on another COE member country by acknowledging the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which are two Georgian breakaway regions.

According to the resolution, Russia’s activities in Georgia and the military operations in Abkhazia, western and central Georgia contradicted the principals of international law. “Phrase “for the protection of its citizens” is inadmissible for international law,” is indicated in the draft resolution.

According to the draft, Russia must be held accountable for violating human rights and humanitarian law in the regions which are under his actual control.
