Kardenakhi Villagers Threaten Seizure of Tractors provided by Georgian President

October 6, 2008

Those living in the village of Kardenakhi from the Gurjaani district requests to allow them to use the tractors that were presented to the village within a presidential rural development program. Locals reported that only the village councilor is authorized to use those tractors and he does not allow villagers to use the equipment.

Residents claim that according to the initial agreement the peasants should have had right to use the tractors for a discounted prices. However, the councilor keeps the tractors in his yard and uses them for his personally benefit.

Ili Gvelukashvili, the village councilor denies the accusation of the villagers during his conversation with the Human Rights Center. He stated that people are dissatisfied because the village is big and there are only two tractors in it.

The Kardenakhi residents urge the Georgian Ministry of Agriculture for assistance. Unless the ministry considers their request, the peasants intend to organize a protest.
