Bus Transport from Kakheti Region to Tbilisi are Banned on November 7

October 23, 2008

Drivers of mini-buses as well as regular buses that serve passengers from the Kakheti district to Tbilisi are banned from working on November 7. The Human Rights Center Kakheti Regional Office was informed that Davit Tkeshelashvili, the State Minister on Regional Management Issues met with the district governors of Kakheti region on October 21. The governors were given oral orders to instruct bus drivers and their bosses not to take regular passengers on this day.

Reliable sources informed us that the Minister told district governors the Georgian Government knew the people from various regions were planning to attend the November 7 demonstration of Georgian non-parliamentary opposition in honoring the terrible events of November 7, 2007. Our source informed us that the district governors were ordered to instruct Kakhetian bus companies not to send buses for the Kakheti-Tbilisi rout in order to restrict people from coming to Tbilisi and attending the organized protest demonstration.

However, the administration of State Minister for Regional Management Issues and Kakheti district governors’ offices flatly denies this information. The meeting of the State Minister and District Governors was attended by Giorgi Ghviniashvili, Kakheti Regional Governor on October 21. He informs that the meeting was held in order to discuss how to effectively spend state financial resources and to discuss other issues related to governmental sponsored programs.

Gela Mtivlishvili, Kakheti
