Abkhazian Ancestral Palace Being Destroyed

October 27, 2008

Neither local authority nor law enforcers are interested by the deconstruction of the ancestral palace of Abkhazians in the village of Kardenakhi in the Gurjaani district. Villagers are destroying the remains of the walls too.

According to the information of the Human Rights Centre, the looting and dismantling of the palace started in 2003. Before that an orphanage was functioning in the yard of the palace. Then, Gurjaani district board decided to abolish the orphanage. Initially, people stole the furniture and other valuables from the abandoned palace. They then started to take away other things as well, such as window and door frames; now they started to tear down the walls too. Even hundred-year-old oak trees were cut in the yard.

Gurjaani district police department and municipality board were informed about the robbery and deconstruction; however, nobody reacted to all what had transpired.
