Dagestanian Lezghins Found Shelter with their Relatives in the Villages of Kvareli District

October 27, 2008

The Human Rights Centre has learned that tens of young Lezghin men arrived from Dagestani to Kakheti Region in the last few days. They found shelter with their relatives in Lezghinian villages in the Kvareli District.

The Lezghins say that the situation in Dagestani, in Makhachkala District is especially rather tensed. Local law enforcers are recruiting young men between the ages of 18-38 years old into army. The Lezghians say that the population was not informed about it beforehand. They say it is somehow connected with the conflict between Georgia and the Russian Federation.

Some young Lizghians who have recently arrived to Georgia were actually born in Georgia. Some of them have duel citizenship and they are the citizens of both countries.

Lezghians live in Tivi, Saruso and Chantliskuri- three villages of Kvareli District.
