Giorgi Andriadze: Government Suspends Patriarchate’s TV Broadcasting Channel

November 4, 2008

Giorgi Andriadze, the director of the Georgian TV Company “Iveria”, stated that Georgian government has finally seized the broadcasting rights the TV company.

With the confirmation of the chairperson of the Georgian Parliament, the Georgian TV Channel 2 will turn into political channel. According to Andriadze, with similar statement the government once more refused to grant frequency to the Georgian TV broadcasting company “Iveria”. The administration of the TV channel has petitioned to responsible bodies about the problem and requested to transfer the frequency of the Channel 2 to the TV Company “Iveria”.

“Georgian authority, with its current decision, finally seized all chances from us to continue broadcasting. “Iveria”, which was established under patronage of the Georgian Patriarchate, will have to suspend broadcasting because of lack of financial sources. We will not be able to continue functioning under such conditions.”

“Cooperative activities of the government and the board of the Georgian Public Broadcasting encourage us to think that they take reasonable steps against the TV Station of the Patriarchate by refusing us to transfer frequency of the Channel 2 when society requests it,” said Giorgi Andriadze.
