Representatives of Telavi Police Department Illegally Deprived Liberty of a Small Girl

November 11, 2008
Gela Mtivlishvili, Kakheti

The Human Rights Center Kakheti Regional Office was informed by representatives of Karajala village, Telavi District that the Telavi Police forced Aliosha Orujov and his family to leave their house. The police executed a court order in following up with this action. The police locked the house and the police and representatives of Special Unit controlled the house perimeter and did not allow anyone to enter the house. As a consequence of this Aliosha Orujov’s nephew, Indira Orujova, 16 were trapped in the house. She could not leave the place for several hours, which can be considered as the fact of illegal deprivation of liberty.

Orujov’s neighbors and associates protested against the action of the police. The police assaulted them for this and eyewitnesses of the incident state that the police beat the protesters with clubs, and some women suffered bodily injuries as a result.

Gocha Baghatrishvili, head of Telavi Police Department has failed to share any comment on this charge. The Human Rights Center Kakheti Regional Office called Vazha Maghradze, deputy Kakheti Regional Prosecutor but he was not answering the call.

Iasha Usupov, the associate of the Orujov family and the inhabitant of Karajala village sued Orujov in Kakheti Arbitrary Court for undue enrichment.  The court accepted his suit and reached a verdict for evicting Aliosha Orujov and his wife together with a child from the building that is located in Karajala. Orujov applied to Telavi District Court for set aside the decision of Kakheti Arbitrary Court. However, Telavi District Court is not charged with adjudication in the case. Aliosha Orujov demanded that a criminal case be launched against Giorgi Kachiashvili, chairperson of Kakheti Arbitrary Court for swindling. The Kakheti Regional Prosecutor’s Office started investigation regarding Orujov’s allegation. However, the appelant’s attorney states that the prosecuotor’s office has not conducted investigation yet.
