Two Children Killed Urekhi Military Base in Batumi, Adjara Region

Yesterday evening, two children died on Urekhi military base, Richard Virubov and Levan Leonidze died in the department of intensive therapy soon after they were taken to hospital. The health conditions of the third child remain satisfactory.

The children of 11 years of age were playing in the territory the base when an explosive device they were playing with blew up. Locals state that several months another child was wounded in the same territory.

The local residents protest the existence of the military base that in under the control of the Defense Ministry and demands that it be closed. “It is empty territory; it is not surrounded by a fence. There is no notice stating that it is dangerous zone and neither is anybody controls it. When Aslan Abashidze was the head of Supreme Council of Adjara Autonomous Republic, the territory was surrounded with a fence and children were not allowed to enter.”
