Leadership of the Council of the EU is Concerned with Recent Tensions in Georgia’s Conflict Zones

November 18, 2008

The leadership of the Council of the European Union condemns the increasing number of incidents occurring in and around Georgia’s conflict zones, which recently claimed 2 deaths in village Dvani on November 10 and several in village of Pakhulani on November 15. The Council leadership stated that such incidents are increasing tensions in the conflict regions.

Council leaders also expressed concern over the safety of international observers who were caught up in an exchange of gunfire between Georgians and Abkhazian border guards in the village of Pakhulani on November 15.

The leadership of the Council of the EU demands that state parties follow the ceasefire agreements. The leadership says that it is unacceptable for the EU that the security of employees of the international monitoring mission (EUMM is not upheld. EU Council leaders urge the all sides of the conflict to follow their commitments and avoid new incidents.
