6 Million GEL Squandered and Kakhetian Infrastructure Still Lacking

November 21, 2008

Based on Resolution # 327 of the Georgian government allocated 6 million GEL on Sighnaghi, Lagodekhi and Gurjaani districts. Kakheti regional prosecutor’s office has since opened a criminal prosecution on based on the unreasonable expenditure of the public money. The Human Rights Center applied to the prosecutor’s office with the request of launching investigation several days ago. Even earlier, representatives of the HR center had studied for what purpose the money had been spending and whether it was properly spent.

Based on the resolution 6 million GEL was to be spent on the development of the infrastructure in the various districts. But in reality only a portion of the scheduled works was implemented and this was done in a shoddy fashion and the material used was on low quality. Wind has already removed roofs from residential buildings that had only recently been repaired.  People have not been supplied with drinking water, and recently constructed bridges have already collapsed.
