Sagarejo District Court Blocks Public Information

January 5, 2009
Kakheti Information Center reported that Sagarejo district court blocks public information. Journalists Gela Mtivlishvili applied to Sagarejo district court a month ago and requested the permission to study criminal case materials on Berdo Asanishvili, former Sighnaghi district governor. However, the court still continues to deny him to issue case materials.

According to the verdict passed on April 2 2007 at Sagarejo district court Berdo Asanishvili and Mamuka Mangoshvili were found guilty and were sentenced to seven-year-imprisonment. Later, Tbilisi Appeal Court did not change the verdict. After the verdict was put in force, the criminal case was sent back to Sagarejo district court.

The journalist claims that the case materials already belong to archive. Consequently, it should be public. Based on the order of Giorgi Maisuradze, judge at Sagarejo district court, the journalist is not allowed to study the case that is illegal as lawyers define.

Sagarejo district court states that only parties to the case are authorized to study case materials and that is reason for their refusal on issuing the public information.
