European Court Might Discuss the Case on the Office of Okruashvili’s Party

January 12, 2009

Tbilisi City Court will file the verdict on the confiscation of the office of the “Movement for United Georgia”, political party of Irakli Okruashvili’s (former Georgian Ministry of Defense) tomorrow. The office is situated on 27 Atoneli Street, Tbilisi. If the office is confiscated, Eka Beselia, the Secretary General of the party, will collect case materials in a week and send them to the European court.

Eka Beselia reported to the news agency Medianews that unexpectedly the court finished the adjudication of such a difficult case after three court hearings.

Beselia said that the Strasbourg Court already discusses the appeal of Irakli Okruashvili against the verdict that was filed in Georgia against Okruashvili in his absence; former defense minister also sues against political persecution on him.

“If the court does not file the verdict in our favor, we will send the court materials to the European Court as additional evidence on political persecution against Irakli Okruashvili continues. We have perfect evidence that will assist European Court to pass verdict  in our favor easier: the verdict of French Court dating September 10 and the decision of the French government on granting political asylum  to Irakli Okruashvili,” said Beselia.

Baeelia claims that Georgian Court will file the verdict in favor of the prosecutor’s office. “If the verdict is not in our favor, as soon as the court files the verdict, I will start collecting case materials and send them to the European Court in a week,” said Beselia.

The Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Justice of Georgia lodged an appeal into Tbilisi City Court demanding the confiscation of Okruashvili’s office in October, 2008.
