Ossetian Separatists Arrested Kists from Pankisi Valley

January 16, 2009

A week ago, Ossetian separatists kidnapped Kists (North Caucasian ethnic group) together with their under-age children. They are still in Tskhinvali detention isolator. Kists from the village of Duisi and Jokolo in Pankisi valley, Georgia, wanted to travel to Chechnya via Tskhinvali. Law enforcers of de-facto Tskhinvali regime arrested them for illegal crossing the “border”.

Health conditions of the detainees in Tskhinvali isolator are not reported yet.

Ministry of Reintegration of Georgia and representatives of Chechen Diaspora in Georgia have been reported about the detention of Kists. The Ministry of Integration petitioned to Red Cross Organization for assistance.

Elene Tevdoradze, deputy Minister of Reintegration, considers the detention as a revenge on ethnic grounds.
