Shutdown of Students’ Newspapers

February 4, 2009

Students’ newspapers were shut down in Batumi State University. Only Batumis Universiteti is being published now. The newspaper Batumis Universiteti publishes only the University lecturers’ articles. The newspaper is funded by the University itself. The students’ newspapers were shut down by the Batumi University administration under the allegation that they did not have enough money for funding all newspapers.

The students’ newspapers helped the students to implement their theoretical knowledge in practice. They do not have this opportunity anymore.
The newspapers Focus +, Stud- News and Labirinti- three newspapers were shut down. The University administration offers the staff of closed newspapers to start working for newspaper Batumis Unversiteti. The students claim that it is unacceptable for them to work for this newspaper because they do not like editorial politics of this newspaper.

Aleko Bakuridze, the Batumi State University Rector suggests the merger of closed newspapers. The students refuse on that: “We used to be rivals. We cannot work together now,” they said.

8 students worked for Stud-News. Tariel Tsetskhladze, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Stud-News claims that this newspaper was the best practice for joung journalists: “It is impossible to study journalism only theoretically. Practice is essential for journalists. We do not have practice anymore.”
