Protest Demonstration at the Ministry of Internal Affairs Demanding the Liberation of the Activist of Okruashvili’s party

March 19, 2009

There was a protest demonstration at the Ministry of Internal Affairs held by the youth organization “Movement for United Georgia” and representatives of youth branch for “April 9 Demonstration” demanding liberation of Kakha Kareli, activist of the movement which was detained in Gori yesterday.

According to the participants of the protest demonstration, the arrangements of opposition parties for protest demonstrations are being discussed everyday at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. As Leri Lapachi, the head of Okruashvili’s Party, says Kakha Kareli is detained without any reason, but only for being an activist of Gori office of “the Movement for the United Georgia”.
Kakha Kareli was detained in the village of Tkviavi by patrol officer. The incident happened when Kakha Kareli entered the shop to buy a cigarette. The argument for his detention was resistance to the patrol officer.

For this reason Kakha Kareli was taken to the custody isolation for 25 days. It’s obvious for everyone, why such punitive measures are being carried out against opposition activists. “The real reason of the detention of Kakha Kareli was his activities for the upcoming demonstration on April 9,” said Leri Lapachi.

According to Levan Gogichaishvili, representative of the HQ for April 9 demonstrations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs launched an active campaign against the opposition activists.

The supporters of Okruashvili’s party will hold a protest demonstration in Gori and demand to liberate Kakha Kareli.
