Nino Burjanadze: Authority Arbitrarily Detained Driver of Badri Bitsadze

March 23, 2009

Nino Burjanadze, leader of the “Democratic Movement for United Georgia” commented on the detention of the supporters of her party and said it is dirty campaign of the government.

At the special briefing Nino Burjanadze stated that government has actively involved in political struggle and they already arrested 7 supporters of the party; among them was driver of Badri Bitsadze (husband of Nino Burjanadze and former head of Frontier Department of Georgia). The driver was together with his pregnant wife in the car.

Burjanadze states the government is afraid of the demonstrations planned for April 9, 2009 and they use all measures against opposition supporters.

“Dirty fight against opposition parties has started. Our party has been target of similar activities for a long time already. At our previous briefing we announced the phone number from which citizens were called and reported that our party is going to use weapon during the demonstrations. Besides that, our supporters are arbitrarily detained and blamed for illegal wearing of weapon. I will not be surprised if one day policemen will find out drugs on me, or weapon in my office or at home,” stated Nino Burjanadze.

She promised the government that they would be punished for every illegal activity they have committed. Burjanadze has informed the ambassadors of the Great Britain, Switzerland, Lithuania, Check Republic, Poland, US, EU and OSCE in Georgia about the detention of their supporters.

“This government has not understood yet that similar methods do not work in Georgia. I warn every policeman not to obey the instructions and not to act beyond the law. Because we will charge them for similar activities,” said Nino Burjanadze.

Head of Batumi office of the “Democratic Movement for United Georgia” Zurab Avaliani, four representatives of the youth branch of the party and Badri Bitsadze’s driver are arrested.
