Public Defender’s Office Will Monitor Demonstrations on April 9

April 3, 2009

The Public Defender’s Office will monitor the demonstrations that will start on April 9. The monitors will wear special hats and t-shirts to distinguish them from demonstrators and to allow abused people apply to them for help easily.

Public Defender Sozar Subari stated that 100 representatives will observe the human rights situation during the demonstrations. Several film-crews will work during the monitoring. A hot-line will be opened at the office of the public defender at the phone-number 99 58 98 and every person will be able to call there in the case of emergency.

According to Subari, information about every-day violations of human rights will be reported to the international organizations.

“Recently, the right to assemble and manifestation is often breached in Georgia. After the Rose Revolution 23 people have been arrested because they participated in protest demonstrations. In order to compel the law enforcers to react on similar violations immediately we will monitor the demonstration very strictly. Film-crews will work at the place and our cars will be there too. In order to enable demonstrators to distinguish our observers easily we have made special dress for them. We will make immediate response to each violation and report about them to the international organizations. We are eager to prevent all violations. The recent incident happened on March 31 near the restaurant “Meidani” where demonstrators were dispersed,” said Sozar Subari.
