Four Members of the Movement “Why” Were Arrested During the Protest Demonstration in Front of the 1st Channel

April 6, 2009

Civil movement “Why?” held protest demonstration in front of the building of the 1st Channel and requested information about the financial estimate of the channel budget. Demonstrators stated they protest partiality of the public broadcasting as well.

During the demonstration the members of the movement started to write logos of the broadcasting company on the pavement in front of the building. However, the law enforcers forbade them to paint the pavement and it resulted into a quarrel between law enforcers and demonstrators. The policemen pushed the young people down the stairs of the TV Company two times.

“We were writing slogans on the pavement that was completely legal activity. Policemen prohibited us to write slogans quite groundlessly and physically assaulted us. The 1st Channel exposed its real face and sent people of Vano Merabishvili, Minister of Internal Affairs, who used severe methods to punish young people,” said Merab Chikashvili, one of the leaders of the movement.

The members of the “Why?” continued their protest on the pavement alongside of Kostava Street though the second incident occurred there. Law enforcers approached them from the area of the TV Company and beat Luka Tsuladze, activist of the movement. It was protested by the movement members. The second incident resulted into the second quarrel and finally four members of the movement, Merab Chikashvili, Kakha Beitrishvili, Bacho Tsomaia and Giorgi Zambakhidze were taken away by patrol police cars.

Irakli Kordzaia, one of the founders of the “Why” stated they have no information about the location of the detainees yet.

“We have meeting behind the Rustaveli Theatre in Jambuli Street N 4 at 5:00 pm today and at 6:00 pm we will make special statement regarding the incident that happened today and future plans of the movement “Why?” said Irakli Kordzaia.
