Representatives of the Government and Opposition Parties Together Honored those who died on April 9 1989

April 9, 2009

Close to the memorial in from of the building of the Parliament of Georgia Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, his Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II held public prayer for those who died on April 9 1989 close .

President Mikheil Saakashvili with his wife, Levan Gachechiladze, the leader of the opposition movement, Davit Bakradze, chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, and Nino Burjanadze, leader of the “Democratic Movement for the United Georgia” were standing next to each other during the prayer.

They came to memorize the tragedy that happened 20 years ago and made comments about the protest demonstration that is planned for today.

Davit Bakradze stated that he cannot see parallels between April 9, 1989 and today.

“If the opposition is interested in concrete proposals we have already offered them a serious packet of reforms in the Constitution, the Election Code and in the self-governance system. These are issues which have been topics of political conflicts within Georgia for many years. If they want a dialogue our offer is quite enough,” said Davit Bakradze.

He added that April 9 is the day of unification and every politician should realize that unification is urgently needed for the country because a scattered Georgia will not be able to develop.

Nino Burjanadze stated that she is particularly concerned by the fact that today the Georgian people have to fight for their independence, unification, democracy and honorable development once again 20 years later. “However, I hope, on April 9, 2009 this circle will be broken and Georgia will live with a better future. We demand the resignation of Mikheil Saakashvili who should allow the country to develop normally,” said Nino Burjanadze.

Levan Gachechiladze, once more underlined that the President should have dialogue with people and not with opposition leaders.
