Representative of the Youth Organization of Okruashvili Party Was Beaten in Gori

April 27, 2009

Representative of the youth organization of the Movement for the United Georgia was attacked. According to Leri Lapachi, a chairman of the youth organization of the movement, Giorgi Martinenko, a representative of the youth organization, was physically assaulted near his house by four masked people on April 25 in Gori.

According to Leri Lapachi, it did not happen for the first time. Representatives of the youth organization of the movement are often threatened and abused during the demonstrations. “On April 25, a car stopped near the entrance of my house. Four masked people got out of the car and beat me with truncheons. Also they threatened me with similar problems in future unless I stopped taking part in the rallies”, mentioned Giorgi Martinenko.

Eka Beselia, a general secretary of the Movement for the United Georgia, was interviewed about the incident and she stated the government tried to threaten and intimidate people even in the regions.

According to Beselia, if the government continues similar activities in future, the opposition would not be responsible for the reaction of the society, which would cause chaos and the government would be responsible for it.

“I am drawing the parallel with the pre-election situation for the parliamentary elections on May 21, 2008. 14 supporters of the opposition parties were beaten and it had psychological influence on the society. The same is done now. 80 similar incidents have occurred since the beginning of the demonstrations. I am warning the Interior Ministry to react on the harassment immediately and to hold an inquiry about the mentioned cases. Otherwise, after the society reaction, the government will be responsible for the chaotic situation”, mentioned Eka Beselia.
