Former and current high-ranking military officials can be imprisoned based on the testimonies made by people detained for the organizing the uprising in Mukhrovani military base. According to the unconfirmed information Koba Otanadze, who was wounded during the special operation, could not give the testimony and after he is interrogated a new wave of detention might start in Georgian army,” reported newspaper “Resonance.”
Military experts do not exclude this possibility because they claim the government tries to maintain political control over the armed forces.
After the incident in Mukhrovani the situation has tensed in the armed forces. Military servants are forbidden to communicate with the civil society at all. Besides that, according to our information, officials of the Constitutional Security Department and Special Operative Department often visit military units. Former Minister of Defense Gia Karkarashvili stated listening apparatus are installed in almost every room of the Ministry.
“The institute of denouncement has been introduced in the army. Listening apparatus are installed in every room; the ministry does not trust even high-ranking officials and it restrains of moral-psychological conditions of soldiers. What we witnessed in Mukhrovani supports the establishment of similar situation in the army; I mean the fact when Supreme Commander-in Chief of Georgia rebuked military servants dressed in military forms like little children.”
“Since September 2008 criminal persecutions have started against the soldiers, who took part in the war in August, 2008. These people are fined. When somebody does not want to see the difference between the prisoner and the soldier it tenses the situation. Demoralization of the highly-trained army is carried out reasonably. The soldiers trained abroad are massively declared to be spies of foreign countries and it demonstrates the power of corresponding structures in Russia.
