Mamuka Areshidze: There Is a Threat for Dispersing Demonstrators in Case the Georgian Patriarch Makes a Statement

May 29, 2009

It is unknown to Mamuka Areshidze, a political scientist, what kind of statement the patriarch was going to make; however he was informed that the Patriarch Ilia II was warned that if he made a special statement the government would disperse the demonstrators. In the interview to news agency Pirveli, Mamuka Areshidze said, that the reason for the current situation which has become tense nowadays was caused by the presence of the government officials in Trinity Cathedral. I do not know what the Patriarch was going to state but as I was informed the patriarch was warned not to make a special statement; otherwise the government would crack down the protest rallies.
