Guria News Journalist Was Physically Assaulted in Police Station

Nato Gegelia, journalist for the regional newspaper “Guria News” was physically assaulted in Chokhatauri police station yesterday. The Interpressnwes was informed by Ia Mamaladze, the editor of the newspaper and the chairperson of Regional Media Association. According to Mamaladze, the journalist was beaten in the police station.

As Mamaladze informed, the journalist Nato Gegelia and a photo correspondent came to the police station to cover the detention of Mamuka Tsintsadze, a member of Republic Party. “After Tsintsadze, was detained his family members requested media source to arrive at the police station to protect the detainee from physical oppression. The journalists found the door of the police station closed, so Nato Gegelia called the head of police station and journalists were allowed to enter the building; there the journalist was beaten and the correspondent was not allowed to take photos though was not beaten. Tato Vasadze, son of Avntandil Vasadze the head of the police department, took part in the assault of the journalist,” said Ia Mamaladze and added that Nato Gegelia undertook a medical expertise which confirmed that she was beaten.

According to Ia Mamaladze, journalists are going to hold a protest rally in front of the office of “Guria News”.
