Levan Vepkhvadze Speaks About Suspicious Circumstances in the Case Materials on Levan Gogichaishvili

June 22, 2009

Vice-speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Levan Vepkhvadze speaks about suspicious circumstances in the case materials on Levan Gogichaishvili, member of the Youth Branch of the Movement “April 9”. Vepkhavdze requests the permission to visit Gogichaishvili.

Vepkhvadze raised the question at the session of the Parliamentary bureau today. He said that wrong information has been spread about the family members of Gogichaishvili lately. More precisely, in the TV program “Patrol Police” his elder brother was declared member of criminal group of Aslan Abashidze’s son (former head of Adjara Autonomous Republic); the second brother was declared to be gangster.

Vepkhvadze stated that he had met deputy minister of internal affairs who personally told him that it was impossible to find any criminal records on Levan Gogichaishvili’s brother; finally a gun was planted on him. Vepkhvadze did not say the name of the deputy minister however he underlined that the person was deputy minister when Irakli Okruashvili occupied the position of the Minister of Internal Affairs.

As for Levan Gogichaishvili, Vepkhvadze said that he was charged based on the testimony of a person who is also charged under the Article 260, Part III of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

Law enforcers found particularly large amount of narcotics on the main witness in Gogichaishvili’s case and “he was released by the prosecutor’s office under plea-bargain and bail of 2 000 GEL. These facts are very suspicious,” said Vepkhvadze who added that he does not remember any other case when a person blame for similar crime was released under bail.

Davit Bakradze, speaker of the Parliament, stated that after the procedures are followed, Vepkhvadze will be able to visit Gogichaishvili and the MP would not face any delays.
